French strawberry Darselect: the history of the creation of the variety, characteristics and secrets of cultivation

Almost every gardener is engaged in the cultivation of delicious strawberries in his garden. She is loved by restless kids, deep old people and serious adults. One of the popular varieties of this berry is Darselect. Its advantages are large-fruited and original taste.

The history of the creation of strawberries Darselect

The Darselect strawberry first appeared in 1998. The country of her birth was France. The originators created a new variety, choosing the Yelsant and Parker varieties by the parents. Darselect is not a remontant species. This berry is currently one of the three most common commercial strawberries in France. It is well known throughout Europe, gradually wins the hearts of Russian gardeners and summer residents.

Description of the variety

The originators name the amazing productivity of Darselect berry picking - up to 20-25 kg per hour. And this is not a publicity stunt: the truth lies in the characteristics of the variety.

Berries

Darselect fruits grow in almost the same shape and size. The surface of the berries is red with a brownish or orange tint. The red color remains inside, but lighter. The pulp is firm and quite firm. This prevents browning and wateriness of the fruit. The peduncle is not firm, therefore it is easy to dress. For a long time, the berries retain their presentation, do not lose it during transportation.

Large fruits are the main advantage of the Darselect strawberry variety

Darselect berries are distinguished by the following varietal characteristics:

  • impressive size (reach 30–35 g, some fruits grow up to 70 g);
  • elongated-conical shape, rounded at the tip of the berry;
  • moderately sweet taste of fruits with an inseparable sourness, which only adds variety to the range of tastes;
  • a smell reminiscent of the aroma of wild strawberries.

Yield

The originators declare the yield from one bush from 700 to 1000 g of fragrant fruits. Gardeners claim that with intensive care, this figure can be increased to 1200.

One bush of Darselect strawberries can produce more than a kilogram of berries

Darselect is a variety of short daylight hours, medium-early ripening period. When grown in open beds, the crop ripens from 10 to 20 June. If you cultivate Darselect under a film cover, then the crop can be harvested after May 20.

Description of the bush

The plant stands out favorably for its appearance among similar varieties. The branches are tall and grow straight. Moderate leafiness does not lead to thickening of the bush. The number of antennae is below average, which also does not provoke thickening of the landings. The strong root system gets stronger as you grow older. In the second and third years, the bush shows the highest yield, then it decreases. In the fourth to fifth year, plantings should be renewed.

The Darselect bush grows straight, does not thicken

Gardeners recommend using the barbaric way to increase yields - to cut off all flowers in the first year. This procedure allows you to achieve maximum productivity in the next season.

With improper care, as well as at the end of fruiting, the berries change shape. They can become corrugated, that is, heart-shaped, accordion-shaped, or with ugly ridges.

Characteristics of the strawberry variety Darselect

The variety is moisture-loving, although it tolerates 40-degree heat. At temperatures above 30 ° C, strawberries need drip irrigation. When approaching 40 ° C, the plant should be shaded with mesh or reflective foil. Without such measures, berries may fall out.

Strawberry Darselect easily tolerates heat, but when the temperature rises to 40 ° C, the bushes need to be shaded

The variety does not differ in frost resistance. Winter with little snow and frosts below 20 ° C force gardeners to cover the plantings in order to protect them from freezing.

The advantages of the variety:

  • large fruits;
  • rich dessert taste;
  • high transportability;
  • heat resistance;
  • suitability for commercial cultivation.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • reduction and deformation of fruits by the end of fruiting;
  • the need for constant watering, especially during dry summers;
  • with a lack of moisture - the separation of the stalk together with the pulp, the appearance of voids inside the berry.

Features of planting and growing

Strawberry Darselect requires compliance with only some of the nuances in planting and care.

Seed preparation

Strawberries reproduce in three ways - by dividing the root, seeds and rosettes:

  • When dividing the root, the following rule is used: take two or three shoots with a strong root system. The division is made just before landing.

    Strawberries are divided into parts by several shoots, while preserving the root system

  • The preparation of seed material with rosettes begins in the summer.
    1. Antennae take root at the site of the rosette formation. To do this, they are pressed close to the ground with wire or covered with soil.
    2. Rooted sockets are planted in a permanent place. Gardeners advise placing 2-3 sockets in one hole.

      Strawberry antennae with rosettes bend to the ground or sprinkle with soil

  • It is very difficult to propagate Darselect by seeds. For gardeners, it is easier to purchase seedlings in pots grown by specialists in nurseries.

It is difficult to grow Darselect seeds, it is better to buy ready-made seedlings in a specialized nursery

Planting strawberries

It is best to plant Darselect strawberries in an open, well-lit area. The sunny side and the lack of shading will have a good effect on increasing yields. Shading will result in small and sour strawberries.

Strawberry bushes take root better when planted in the fall. The ideal time for planting this berry is the second half of August - the first decade of September. At this time, the heat has already subsided, and the seedlings have time to root before the onset of winter. The harvest in the first year will not be so high, but you can still enjoy the sweet berry.

  1. The beds are well dug up, sand and humus are added (a bucket of both per square meter).
  2. At a distance of about half a meter, holes are dug up to 15 cm deep.
  3. Pits are spilled with water up to a liter in each and the seedlings are laid out.

    Strawberry seedlings, prepared for planting, have a well-developed aboveground system

  4. The following scheme of planting strawberry bushes is observed: with a single-row arrangement between seedlings - 35–40 cm, with a two-row arrangement - 40 cm. Between rows - 90–100 cm. Thus, no more than four plants are placed per square meter.

    Four strawberry bushes should be placed per square meter

  5. Then the roots are carefully covered with earth, leaving the growth bud above the surface.
  6. The soil around the bushes is pressed down and watered again with the same amount of water.

During engraftment, seedlings need daily watering. Later, the plant requires the usual care for strawberries:

  • watering two to three times a week,
  • periodic weeding from weeds,
  • loosening the soil once a week.

Feeding strawberries

The plant needs feeding during flowering and fruiting. During the season, Darselect should be fed three times:

  • in spring, immediately after the snow cover disappears;
  • in summer, after the main harvest in mid-June;
  • autumn, mid-September.

In spring, strawberries need nitrogen to stimulate growth. For each plant, you need to pour about a liter of solution. The gardener can, at his discretion, choose one of the proposed types of feeding.

In the summertime, flower buds are laid for the next harvest, so the bushes need trace elements and potassium. For each root - half a liter of top dressing.

After two weeks, this feeding should be repeated. After fruiting, the plant needs to recuperate.

Young shoots need a supply of nutrients to prepare for winter. In dry weather, from 300 to 500 ml of solution is spent on each plant.

Fruit buds on strawberries for next year's harvest are laid in August - early September. At this time, there is a decrease in daylight hours to 11–12 hours and a gradual drop in temperature.

  1. In late autumn, the strawberries are exposed by cutting off all the leaves.
  2. Plants are covered with straw, dry leaves or non-woven fabric for successful wintering.

Reviews of experienced gardeners

Darselect strawberries are picky. Caring for her is not much different from caring for strawberries in the traditional sense. Resistance to diseases and pests allows it to be grown on an industrial scale. Darselect can be grown even by inexperienced novice gardeners. Therefore, a good harvest is a reward for trying to tame a foreign guest and daily labor on the ground.

Description of the variety

Bushes

The erect bushes of Darselekt are characterized by large dimensions and a powerful root system. The leaves are three-lobed, rounded in shape, abundantly cover the bush, creating a dark green "cap". The dark shape of the leaf blade is in good harmony with the light veins, the plant looks very decorative. The serrated edges of the leaves further enhance the visual effect. The pubescence is weak, the hairs on the stems and leaves are practically absent.

New growth buds are laid in late August and early September (with short daylight hours and in cooler conditions). The number of whiskers is moderate, but sufficient for reproduction. The advantage of a small amount of mustaches is that they do not thicken the plantation.

Berries

The Darselect strawberry variety is distinguished by its early fruiting: mass harvesting of berries begins in mid-June. Flowering occurs at the end of May, so the interval between flowering and fruiting is quite short. The harvest period is not extended and is about two weeks. In the conditions of most of the territory of Russia, there is a danger of freezing flowers by recurrent frosts.

Characteristic features of the fruit:

  • elongated cone shape with rounded tip
  • weight - 20-40 g, maximum weight - 50 g.
  • color red with a brick tint
  • taste close to strawberry
  • the surface is shiny with deeply depressed seminal fossae
  • the flesh is firm and firm
  • slight wateriness
  • high keeping quality and transportability.

Note: The berries change shape from conical to oval throughout the season, and deformed fruits appear at the end of the growing season. This is primarily due to low temperatures and high humidity and, as a result, poor pollination.

Yield

Abundant fruiting of the Darselect variety lasts no more than 4 years, after which the plantation is renewed. One bush gives up to 800 g of strawberries, with proper agricultural technology this figure can reach 1 kg. Due to its large size and firm stem, the collection of berries does not cause any difficulties and takes place quickly.
