Knowing the intricacies of proper preparation, carrots can lie inside the basement until spring. Some manage to keep it until summer.

It all depends on the variety and preparatory work. The degree of preservation is influenced by the fact that purchased carrots are laid in the basement or grown in the garden.

In apartment conditions, the root crop retains its qualities if place it on a balcony, where it is not cold, in winter or in a storage room. It also requires preparation and proper location.

In addition to preserving at home, options with harvesting root crops for future use are suitable here. For example, canning, drying or freezing.

A small amount can be simply placed in the refrigerator, where the roots can lie and not deteriorate for up to 2 months.

In the cellar

Traditionally, containers for storing carrots were not used, they simply poured a pile of sand and buried root vegetables in it. Now this method is often abandoned using plastic or wooden containers.

At the bottom of the box, so that sand does not spill out, paper or cellophane is covered. Paper will be preferred as it is breathable. A layer of sand is poured on top, level it, if stones come across, they are removed.

Lay the roots in an even layer, leaving small gaps so that sand can wake up there without problems.

Sprinkle sand on top of the carrot layerso that it is well covered. Everything is well leveled for the next layer of root crops.

Advice: instead of sand, root crops can be sprinkled with sawdust or onion husks.

Alternate layers as long as the height of the box allows... If necessary, you can store several boxes, it all depends on the number of carrots.

There is no need to cover the boxes except for sand. Read about how to properly prepare root vegetables in the material below.

On the balcony

Before the onset of cold weather, the safety of vegetables can be ensured even on non-glazed balconies. but better if there is a balcony, protected from moisture and sunwhere the temperature in winter is 0 - 1 ° C.

You need to store carrots in boxes, restoring the layers with newsprint... Cover the top of the box with cellophane and a cloth, the roots will have enough moisture and coolness.

Tip: instead of paper, you can use sand as in the basement version.

Freezing in the freezer

Almost all vegetables are preserved by freezing, carrots are ideal for this purpose... This method will save time on cooking, because the vegetable will be peeled and chopped.

Before placing inside the freezer root vegetables need to be cleaned and rinsed under running water... You can freeze carrots in different ways:

  • cut into cubes, rings or strips;
  • grate or grind with a combine;
  • use a Korean carrot grater;
  • cut into cubes or whole.

The cutting method is selected individually based on personal preference. For example, grated is suitable for frying, and in cubes and whole for carrot puree.

Chopped vegetables are laid out in plastic bags or sealed containers for freezing. Placed inside a chest freezer or freezer compartment. The only negative when frozen is that vegetables lose 65-80% of their usefulness.

Important: you can store in this way until the next harvest, this method will never fail.

Is it possible to store in the apartment in the refrigerator

Inside the refrigerator root crops are able to maintain their value and shape for a fairly long period.

Carrots will feel comfortable on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator if you follow some rules:

  1. Prepare root vegetables correctly, in no case wash them.
  2. Washed carrots are not suitable for long-term storage. If it is washed, dry it, place it in a plastic bag. Close it hermetically, then moisture will remain inside.
  3. In the case of unwashed vegetables, dry them. Enumerate so that there is no rot and damage. Put a plastic bag inside and tie it so that there is no air access.
  4. For storing vegetables, a special niche or shelf at the bottom of the refrigerator is usually used.

When you need to take out the carrots from the refrigerator, the package is untied, taken as needed and closed back. In this case, you should see if there are any spoiled root vegetables inside.

If everything is in order, don't worry. If putrefactive damage is found, it is better to process or freeze such carrots.

In packages at home

If you put root vegetables inside a bag and store it in an apartment, if the vegetables are of high quality, they can lie like this for 2-3 weeks.

but there is no guarantee that they will not start to deteriorate... The top may look good, but the inside of the carrots will start to rot.

With this method, you need to regularly check the packages for putrefactive changes.

How to prepare carrots for storage

The preparatory moment is the most responsible, on what and how the vegetable will be stored, the terms of its preservation depend.

After all, any vegetable requires certain temperature and humidity conditions, and carrots are no exception. There are many ways to store carrots in a special cellar and in an ordinary apartment.

Preparing carrots for storage

Before storing carrots, you need to prepare them. I am doing this:

  1. I selected from the total mass those that have any damage: cracks, chips, rotten places. These are not suitable for storage, as they will quickly deteriorate.
  2. I removed dirt from the surface of the carrots as well as possible with a dry cloth. If it does not work out in this way, then I rinsed it under running water.
  3. I put it to dry for 2-3 hours in the shade.
  4. Treated with a solution of potassium permanganate. For this, 10 g of the product was dissolved in 5 liters of water. I put the fruits in the liquid and left for 2 hours. This treatment prevents the appearance of white rot in root crops and pest damage.
  5. I dried it again so that no moisture remained on the surface.

This instruction for preparing carrots is suitable if you decide to keep the vegetables intact. If you store it in a chopped state, then you do not need to soak in potassium permanganate, there should be no dirt on the surface.

Other vegetable crops can be preserved for winter consumption. For example, read how to keep fresh cucumbers for longer. There are a couple of interesting ways to do this.

All about storing carrots

Carrots should be harvested before the onset of frost. Usually in the middle lane this should be done in September. If you miss the moment and let the fruits freeze, they will become bitter and will be worse stored.

Harvested only in dry weather. It is desirable that the days are sunny. First you need to dig in the fruit a little. You can use a shovel or pitchfork to do this. Then pull it out of the ground by the tops. This should be done carefully and carefully. If you want the fruits to be sweeter, then it is better to remove them from the ground in the evening. During the day they usually accumulate sugar in themselves, and with the onset of darkness they begin to consume it.

After digging, you must immediately cut off the greens, leaving 2 cm of tops on top. After the roots are placed on the bed for drying. It is better to cover them from the direct sun. If the weather does not allow them to dry in this way, it is worth putting them in a dry, warm room. Leave so for 2-3 hours.

Then it is worth trimming the heads of root crops by a couple of centimeters. This will prevent them from germinating during storage. You can also remove fine tips. They are the first to start to deteriorate and rot, so it is easier to get rid of them right away. After pruning, you need to give the carrots a couple more hours in order for the slices to dry. It is worth cleaning it from the earth using a dry method without water. It is better to leave a little dirt than to damage the surface - these carrots will not last long. After cleaning, you need to put it in a cool room for a day so that the roots lie down.

Then they need to be sorted by size, and diseased or damaged specimens must be removed. Those that were cut with a shovel, have cracks on themselves, were infected with parasites, will not be suitable for long-term storage and will quickly deteriorate.

If you are just thinking about planting a crop, you should pay attention to varieties that can be removed for long-term storage. The early ones, which include short and round fruits, are not stored for a long time. It is better to choose mid-ripening varieties (Moscow winter, Red giant, Altair) and late-ripening (Queen of autumn, Karlena).

Carrots can be stored in plastic bags with ventilation holes. But, as experience shows, in such a package, carrots will not stay fresh for long and will start to rot quickly enough. In other words, the method is only suitable for short-term storage (1-2 months).

This method requires an aluminum flask, at the bottom of which sawdust is placed, absorbing excess moisture. Then the carrots are prepared for storage - they need to cut off about a centimeter of the root crop along with the tops and the "tail". Then the carrots are dried, kept in a cool place for 24 hours and placed in the storage place along with the moss.

Conditions, temperature and shelf life of carrots

Conditions other than location also include temperature, humidity, ventilation and lack of direct sunlight.

  • Temperature conditions. It doesn't matter if there are carrots in the basement or on the balcony. It is important at what temperature the carrots are stored. Recommended values are from zero to two degrees Celsius. But at zero and below, the carrot fruits begin to freeze slightly. Therefore, from time to time they need to be examined for rot and damage. And if the thermometer rises from two to five and above degrees, the carrots will perceive it as a spring thaw and may sprout, and then wither.
  • Humidity level. The optimal figure is 70%. This will keep the carrots from dehydration, lethargy and rot. It is possible to slow down the evaporation of the liquid by removing the tops and sprinkling the layers with shavings and sand.
  • Ventilation. You need to ventilate the storage constantly. This is the only way to avoid diseases, infection of carrots and preserve all the beneficial properties. Any container (boxes, bags) must have ventilation openings. It does not hurt to place lime next to the container, which can absorb excess moisture and the resulting condensation.

The more closely you adhere to the recommendations, the higher the chances of increasing the shelf life of carrots to the maximum possible - 12 months.

  • the hostess can resort to several storage methods - freezing, basement or garden bed - and in the future decide on the best
  • do not place carrots near apples. Fruit ethylene is harmful to carrots. By the way, next to potatoes "neighborhood" is also not recommended
  • the best carrots for storage are “hundred days”. This means that it should not take more than 3.5 months from the moment of planting to ripening. Harvesting too early will negatively affect health and flavor, while harvesting too late will tend to build up sugars. This will make the carrot especially tasty for rodents.
